Sandy Cameron and Chris Petterson

  • The Nexus at First 450 Okanagan Avenue East Salmon Arm, BC V1E 1E6 Canada (map)

Local titans of tenor saxophone, Sandy Cameron and Chris Petterson team up this month for a special late fall session at the Salmon Arm Jazz Club on October 26.

Their 12-year relationship blends a 50-year generational span of improvisational experience and an impressive repertoire of familiar and not-so-familiar tunes. Both are formidable improvisers with very different styles. “It should be interesting for listeners to compare our playing,” says Sandy. “Chris has theoretical knowledge that I struggle with. I rely on the melody and play more by ear, while Chris knows the melodies but follows patterns and creates melodies following the chord changes. I think his sound is more modern.”

The relationship between the two musicians began in 2011 with Chris taking lessons from Sandy. Chris went on to attend the Jazz School at Vancouver Island University with some of the best jazz musicians on the island as instructors. “I was blown away with Chris’ playing!” says Sandy when he returned to Salmon Arm. That’s high praise from a musician whose own resume is impressive.

Both are Jazz Club favourites. Sandy recently released his album, Sandy Plays Benny, recorded at Song Sparrow Hall in Salmon Arm this past June. The album features arrangements of tunes made famous by the great jazz clarinetist, Benny Goodman. And Chris was featured playing to a sold-out crowd this summer at the first Jazz in the Park at R.J. Haney in Salmon Arm. Together they represent two of the very best of the Shuswap’s remarkable and flourishing jazz music scene. Sandy and Chris are joined by Jordan Dick on guitar, Jake McIntyre-Paul on bass, and Will Friesen on drums.
